AILA GMS-CILS conference, Vienna, Austria

As Chair of AILA, GMS (Global Migration Section), I am specially delighted that the 4th Annual GMS-CILS EU (European Conference) took place in-person in Vienna, Austria, week of February 27, 2023. We had a record registration with the conference being oversubscribed! The topic of the conference was Global Mobility in an Age of Constant Insecurity: Technology, Strategies and Solutions. I was honored to serve as Discussion Leader for a panel of global migration subject matter experts from Italy (Marco Mazzeschi), Germany (Dieter Kohlfurst), United Kingdom (Samar Shams and Natasha Hotson) and US (Clayton Cartwright) on the topic of Politics Not Policy: Turbulent Times in Global Mobility.

A first this year was the organization of a Consular Tour at the Embassy of India, Vienna. I am deeply grateful for the efforts of the Indian Consul General, Dr. Swati Kulkarni and her team, in connecting and recommending GMS to the Indian Embassy in Vienna to host a Consular tour for our attendees. My deep appreciation for the Indian Embassy, Vienna for hosting AILA GMS global migration attorneys on March 2, 2023! Ambassador Jaideep Mazumdar met us and shared the great news of a recently concluded agreement between India and Austria for a 1 year holiday tourist visa that will facilitate youth of both countries between 18- 30 years, to visit and work. A consular presentation informed us of the various Indian work and non work visa categories and requirements. Our visit ended with delectable Indian snacks- samosa and gulab jamun and chai, and an exhibition of sustainability and environmental initiatives undertaken by India.

Apart from learnings in global mobility practice management and trends through expert panels, the conference provided several social events – small dinners, curling, Vienna city tour in a tram ride, winetasting – as opportunities for attendees to network and provide business development.
