F-1 OPT & Employment

It was wonderful to visit the Dean Rusk Law Center at UGA School of Law after a “covid” break last year. I was in Athens last week to present on F-1 OPT & Employment, to the LL.M. class of 2021-22. This year’s highly accomplished class includes 15 lawyers and 2 judges from a wide range of countries – Russia, Nigeria, Turkey, Germany, Bangladesh, Bahamas, Argentina, Mexico, Ecuador, Venezuela, and Iran.

The students were engaged and eager to learn about the OPT process and opportunities for post OPT employment. They had several interesting questions regarding OPT key dates; OPT start dates; F-1 grace period and unemployment time; remote work; and valid status for taking the July bar exam. All in all, a very enjoyable Friday afternoon with a great group of interactive students!

It was also very nice to spend some time with the new Dean Rusk International Law Center Director, Melissa J “MJ” Durkee and Laura Kagel, Director of International Professional Education. My thanks to Laura for inviting me and to Mandy Dixon, her Assistant, for coordinating the event in the beautiful boardroom of the Center!
